Step into a 1940s Broadway hit, “a song and dance show with great heart” (The New York Daily Mirror).

Sam and Susan Cooper are trying to recall a time when their marriage was happy. They reckon it was 1790… Follow the ups and downs of their relationship, as we drop into scenes of their family life spanning 150 years of American history. Sparkling vaudeville acts provide a touch of satirical commentary along the way.

With Love Life, Kurt Weill and lyricist Alan Jay Lerner (My Fair Lady) created a trailblazing piece of theatre that inspired musicals from Cabaret and Chicago to Company. This new production puts the orchestra on stage and part of the action, poised to dazzle with inventive orchestrations and hummable tunes.

Supported by, and recorded for release in collaboration with, the Kurt Weill Foundation.

Themba will be performing the roles of Magician, Con Man and Interlocutor.

There will be three performances at the Leeds Grand Theatre: 16 Jan (19:00), 17 Jan (18:00), and 18 Jan (14:30).

A bus travelling through a gentrifying and displaced South London, is carrying a diverse group of young people when it is hijacked by Alt and Far-Right radicals. Ideologies, identities and loyalties collide as the passengers are confronted with the growing violence on their doorstep. In their schools. On their airways. What happens next is influenced by the audience, who actively participates in shaping the fate of our passengers. Link In My Bio, with its blend of cross-cultural instrumentation, spoken word and grime, boldly explores prejudice, neo-fascism and social media’s impact – how it can insidiously change the way we think and what we believe is acceptable. By incorporating a unique blend of gaming techniques and digital visual language, this ground-breaking opera redefines the traditional boundaries of the art form. Luxembourg’s contemporary music ensemble United Instruments of Lucilin accompanies the cast.

Three Choirs Festival: Stanford's Stabat Mater

We begin our 2024 residency at the Three Choirs Festival in Worcester with music by Mason, Holst and Stanford.

Step into a magical world in Grace-Evangeline Mason’s The Imagined Forest, an enchanting musical picture of a wild woodland filled with colour, light and beauty. The mystical tones continue in Holst’s glorious The Hymn of Jesus, a call to join the joyful divine dance and a unique response to the suffering of the First World War.

Then comes some of Charles Villiers Stanford’s finest and most compelling music in the Stabat Mater. A vivid musical depiction of the Passion and the sorrows of Mary, the intensity and drama of the opening subsides into ethereal beauty at the close, telling of the hope of redemption and life in paradise.

Themba will be performing the baritone solos in the Stabat Mater.

THE F**GOTS AND THEIR FRIENDS BETWEEN REVOLUTIONS (Amsterdam)

Welcome to this fantastic queer version of world history in which friendships and pleasure are central. The queer community is celebrated here with song and dance, and new myths and fables are born.

The Faggots and Their Friends Between Revolutions is a musical theatre piece based on the cult 1977 novel of the same name by Larry Mitchell and Ned Asta. It offers a vision of world history through a queer lens. With a cast of actors, singers, dancers and musicians, this musical version by composer Philip Venables and director Ted Huffman reworks the original text into a kaleidoscopic journey that blends music and storytelling: look forward to re-enacted battles, as well as cheerleading and raves. Venables’ varied music ventures into Elizabethan lute songs, bossa nova, techno, with occasional moments that would not seem out of place in a Disney musical.

The result is an anarchic, satirical celebration of queer experience that is both vulnerable and daring. Sharing deeply personal stories proves both comforting and healing, as the marginalised are here not side-lined but take centre stage. The world they create constitutes a sharp critique of capitalism, assimilation and patriarchy that continues to be relevant today, when radical change remains needed.

Friends of Philip Venables pointed the novel out to him and Huffman. Venables: ‘The book was all about sex positivity, gender freedom and a self-determined life. For these friends of mine, the book was a kind of bible. I couldn’t get it out of my head.’

'irresistibly, unforgettably compelling' - The Guardian ★★★★

Brahms: Requiem (St Luke's, Bath)

Selig sind, die da Leid tragen, den sie sollen getrösstet werden – Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted.

Even without the heart-stopping music those opening words of the Brahms Ein Deutsches Requiem must surely resonate with everyone - those with religious beliefs and those with none. This moving and monumental piece proved a turning point in the composer’s already burgeoning career. Brahms wrote the words himself using the Lutheran Bible rather than the Catholic Latin mass, and the human concern for the living as well as the dead shines through every movement.

Paragon Singers look forward to presenting this pinnacle of the Romantic choral canon in a small-scale chamber style, with the four hand piano accompaniment with pianists Ikuko Inoguchi and Sally Goodworth, soprano Margaret Lingas and conducted by Sarah Latto. Themba will be the baritone soloist.

Ex Cathedra: St John Passion

300 years after its first performance, Bach’s St John Passion remains as powerful and profound as it must have been in 1724. The human drama of the story - Pilate’s dilemma, Peter’s denial - plus the emotion of the characters makes this a compelling pilgrimage, whatever your belief. And then there is the supreme beauty of Bach’s music, heightened by the colours and poignancy of the period instruments - not least the majestic acceptance of ‘Es ist vollbracht’ (It is accomplished).

Themba will sing the part of Jesus in this performance at Birmingham Symphony Hall with Ex Cathedra Choir & Baroque Orchestra conducted by Jeffrey Skidmore.

Sung in German with English surtitles.

Schubert Mass in Ab (St Paul's Church, London)

Schubert’s fifth Mass setting is arguably his most songful and inventive. His integration of the soloists and chorus, mastery of fluid harmonies, and idiomatic treatment of the orchestra’s woodwind section give the Mass in A flat major a symphonic quality which would later inspire Bruckner. Schubert regarded it as the finest of his six Latin Mass settings.

Themba will be singing the bass solos for this concert with the West London Chorus and Orchestra British Sinfonietta, conducted by Hilary Campbell.

Waste Paper Opera: Free to Choose (Madrid)

Free to Choose is an operatic financial sci-fi (fi-fi), narrated by Milton Friedman, in which we encounter the credit banking system as a time travelling machine. In 1997, in post economic crash Hong Kong, Philip Tose, ex-race car driver and CEO of an insolvent company travels to the future to borrow a lump sum from his older self to rescue his business. Hong Kong in 2047 turns out not to be very different from the Hong Kong of “One Country, Two systems”: centralisation has not eradicated nepotism, and activism has become rating activism: young people advocating for free time travel for everyone, including the untrustworthy and the discredited of a corrupt credit system. The piece was produced in collaboration with Rudá Babau and Waste Paper Opera (Klara Kofen, James Oldham, Gary Zhexi Zhang, Anna Palmer)

Having featured on the original soundtrack, Themba will be singing live for this special performance at Medialab Matadero.
